Fitment note: Thread size, overall length, connector design and heating characteristics differ between BMW glow plug models. Please provide the OE number, engine code, vehicle model and production year before ordering.
BMW vehicles with the same model name may use different glow plugs depending on the engine code, production year and control system. Vehicle model alone is therefore not enough to confirm the correct part.
Please provide:
BMW OE number
Engine code
Vehicle model
Production year
Existing product sample or dimensions if the OE number is unavailable
Huizhan can check OE numbers and cross-references before quotation and production.
BMW engines fitted with glow plugs rely on compression to ignite fuel. In cold conditions, however, the temperature inside the combustion chamber may be too low for stable ignition.
When the ignition is switched on, the engine control unit supplies current to the glow plugs. The alloy heating element quickly raises the temperature around the fuel injection area, helping the engine start more easily.
Some systems continue to operate the glow plugs for a short period after start-up. This after-glow phase helps stabilise combustion and reduce white smoke while the engine is still cold.
The replacement glow plug must match the correct rated voltage, dimensions, connector design and heating characteristics. Selecting a product only by vehicle model can lead to incorrect installation or electrical faults.
Common signs of a faulty glow plug include difficult cold starting, longer cranking time, rough running immediately after start-up, white smoke and stored glow plug fault codes.
1. Read the fault memory
Use a BMW-compatible diagnostic tool to identify the affected cylinder and check whether the fault is related to the glow plug, wiring or control module.
2. Inspect the connectors and wiring
Check for loose terminals, corrosion, damaged insulation and overheated connectors. Poor electrical connections can produce symptoms similar to a failed glow plug.
3. Compare resistance readings
With the ignition switched off and the circuit safely isolated, compare the resistance readings of the glow plugs. An open circuit or a reading that differs significantly from the others may indicate a fault.
4. Check the glow plug control module
A glow plug fault code does not always mean the glow plug itself has failed. The control module, power supply, wiring and ground connections should also be checked.
5. Remove the glow plug only when necessary
Removal should be carried out with the correct tools and procedure to reduce the risk of damaging the glow plug or cylinder-head threads. Bench testing should only be performed by trained technicians using the correct rated voltage.
